Philip Martens, President and CEO of Novelis, predicts that the global demand for automotive aluminum will increase by an average of 25% annually from 2010 to 2015. The demand for aluminum in electronic products and high-end specialty products, represented by computers and mobile phones, will increase by an average of 6% annually. The demand for aluminum in traditional beverage cans will increase by an average of 4-5% annually.
Among them, the automotive industry will become the sector with the fastest growth in demand for aluminum plates. Novelis currently holds a market share of over 50% in the global automotive aluminum industry. In 2011, Novelis' global sales revenue reached 11 billion US dollars.
Owen Mayer, Senior Vice President of Novelis, predicts that the demand for aluminum in Asia will increase from 8 million tons to 16 million tons from 2010 to 2020, with China being the fastest-growing market with an average annual growth rate of up to 10%. As China becomes the world's largest automobile production and sales market, the automotive industry is becoming the "mainstay" of aluminum demand.
Novelis' aluminum plate production plant located in Changzhou National High tech Industrial Development Zone is expected to start production by the end of 2014. At that time, it can replace European factories for imports and directly supply Chinese and foreign automobile manufacturing enterprises with a focus on the Yangtze River Delta region. Some products can also meet the needs of the electronics and beverage industries and achieve exports.
The land area of Novelis' Changzhou factory is nearly 65 hectares, with reserved space for capacity expansion. Philip Martens pointed out that this is Novelis' first direct investment project in China, and 'this is just the first step'.
